A Mixed Bunch

Selection of 4 wines

Here’s a short selection of a mixed bunch of wines I’ve been drinking over the last week or so, some very good and one I couldn’t quite make up my mind about even though I’ve been looking forward to drinking it for a while.

Esprit De Chablis 2018

Waitrose £10 (usual price around £17)

A Mixed Bunch - French bottle of Esprit de Chablis review

Picked up during the recent 10 For £10 promotion, everything a good Chablis should be, lively citrus fruit, very dry, lots of minerality and sharp bright acidity but all nicely balanced, great value at £10

Caronnes Ste Gemme 2011

Majestic £16.99 (£14.99 Multi buy) 2014 vintage

A mixed bunch -Caronnes-Ste-Gemme Merlot Cabernet from Bordeaux review

I was really looking forward to trying this but if I have to be truthful it was a little disappointing. A classic Bordeaux it most definitely is, full of cedar wood, leather but for me a little astringent and It was hard for the fruit to shine behind that dry tannic, bold, exterior, it needed decanting which to be fair I didn’t do. Probably still needs more time to develop.

Silk & Spice red blend

Majestic £10.99 (£8.24 Multi buy)

A mixed bunch - Silk & Spice Portuguese red wine blend from Majestic review

This was a very agreeable Portuguese red blend of mainly Touriga Nacional with some Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. Dark cherry fruit, vanilla, smoke, oak and nutmeg along with a touch of sweetness. A crowd pleaser and very easy to drink but watch out for that 14% abv.

Paul Mas Reserve Languedoc 2018

Waitrose £9.39

A mixed bunch -Paul Mas Languedoc Rouge 2018 Grenache, Syrah and Carignan review

Paul Mas is one of those brands that when you see his wine on the supermarket shelf you can be confident that it’s going to be a pretty decent bottle and this red blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah and Carignan is no exception. Dark and brooding red with blackberries, spice, vanilla and soft tannins an absolute delight to drink.

A varied selection all have their merits and all very drinkable.
