I first came across this Kangarilla Road Shiraz a few years ago at a tasting event where I sampled the 2009 vintage, the impression it made has always stayed with me and now it remains as one of my favourite Shiraz’s in this price range.
The pleasure from this wine starts with the elegant looking bottle with its simple iconic vine leaf label and the elegance continues when you open the screw cap and first smell the lovely dark fruits emanating from the glass.
In the glass the wine is almost inky in colour but it’s the aroma that really hits you, full of rich blackberries, mulberry, cherries, menthol, chocolate and some tobacco, it really was quite intense.
The palate is full, rich and incredibly smooth, dark fruits again take over and there is a little smokiness along with, cassis, chocolate, cedar, vanilla, herbs and white pepper. Tannins and acidity are noticeable but well balanced and the whole package just delivers.
Every time I revisit this wine I remember that first tasting and a few years on nothing has changed it’s still an excellent wine and firmly remains as one of my go to Shiraz’s.
