I’ve often heard it said that if you are in a restaurant or at home struggling to find a wine to pair with your dinner, you would not go far wrong by picking an Italian. Well this Morellino Di Scansano from Tuscany would fit the bill perfectly, being predominately Sangiovese 90% and the further 10% made up of other local indigenous grapes, it’s almost the perfect ‘go with anything’ wine.
Morellino Di Scansano 2018
The first thing that struck me when I opened this was how aromatic it was, heady aromas of ripe cherries and cranberry hit me before i got my nose anywhere near the glass. I heard this described as sappy and I wouldn’t disagree, cherry & strawberries dominate the taste making it very fruity and bright with a touch of roasted herbs in the background. It’s slightly tart but not overly and an abv of 13% makes it quite easy to drink.
It’s not going to win any awards for complexity but if you want a refreshing red full of red fruits that’s a match for most foods then you would be hard pressed to find something better for the price.
This could quite well end up becoming my go to house red. A bottle I can grab quickly and be confident that it would probably go with any food I’m thinking of eating. On offer at the moment in Waitrose for £7.99 until 2nd June and well worth trying this red from Tuscany.
