Things didn’t quite go to plan when having a small family get together, didn’t imagine sitting in my sons garden, winter coat on under a gazebo which was being blown around by gale force winds, having to take cover in their garage when the heavens opened with thunder lightning and torrential rain. Not to mention socially distancing only able to see our 1 year old grandson through the conservatory window because it was too cold and wet for him to be outside. The good news is there was take away pizza washed down with a pretty decent bottle of Chianti the excellent Villa Cafaggio Chianti Classico 2016.
Villa Cafaggio Chianti Classico 2016
It may well be one of the most commonly consumed wines in Italy but I must admit, I for one don’t drink enough of it and this was a pretty good example of how good Chianti can be.
Elegant looking but heavy bottle, the wine itself was very dry with heaps of mouth watering acidity, full of berry fruits along with some sour tart cherry. It was smokey, leathery and had pronounced tannins, peppery spice, cloves and oak were all noticeable.
All in all this was a lovely example of how good the Sangiovese grape can be, maybe not for everyone due to the sour tartness but as Chianti’s go it’s pretty good.
All around the table enjoyed it and it paired beautifully with our pizza’s. Just a bizarre afternoon especially at the start of June, drinking Chianti wearing a hat scarf and winter coats, dodging rain showers, hail. thunder and lightning not to mention gale force winds.
