No I wasn’t out in the glorious sunshine by the beach with a plate of grilled seafood drinking this Villarei Albariño, more like sitting in a kitchen on a damp cold and miserable winters day in the UK but this didn’t detract from me enjoying what was a fabulous white wine from Val do Salnés in the Rías Baxias region of north west Spain.
Majestic wines are selling this as part of their WIGIG (when it’s gone it’s gone) promotion apparently the winery only made around 1,000 cases, so my advice after tasting this is to get yourself along and snap up this lovely wine, I for one, will be back for more.
Villarei Albariño 2019
Ok, let me start by saying this is not your run of the mill Albariño this is, in my opinion a definite step up in quality. I’m not saying that other Albariño’s are by any means inferior, there are a lot supermarkets selling pretty decent ones all showing that fabulous freshness of primarily citrus and stone fruits with that bright acidity. This Villarei is slightly different, it’s more to do with richness and texture while still retaining the fruit which takes a back seat but still shows green apples and lemon along with some tropical flavours notably peach, there’s a hint of herbs and a creaminess on the finish due to ageing on lees which adds to its complexity.
This really was a treat and really deserves my 9/10 cork rating which I don’t give out lightly but in this case, well deserved. Well done to Majestic for stocking this and highlighting how good Albariño can be.
